BACKGROUND
Alpha1-antichymotrypsin(α1AC)isanalphaglobulinglycoproteinproducedintheliverthatisamemberoftheserpinsuperfamily.Inhumans,itisencodedbytheSERPINA3gene.α1ACinhibitstheactivityofproteasessuchascathepsinGfromneutrophilsandchymasesfrommastcellsbycleavingthemintodifferentconformations.Thisactivityprotectstissues,suchasthelowerrespiratorytract,fromdamagecausedbyproteolyticenzymes.α1ACisanacutephaseproteinthatisinducedduringinflammation.Deficiencyofthisproteinhasbeenassociatedwithliverdisease,andmutationshavebeenidentifiedinpatientswithParkinsondiseaseandchronicobstructivepulmonarydisease.ItisalsoassociatedwiththepathogenesisofAlzheimer'sdiseaseasitenhancestheformationofamyloid-fibrils.
