Alphacrystallinsarewater-solublelensproteinsofthevertebrateeyethatarerelatedtothesmallheatshockproteinfamily.Lenscrystallinsaredividedintoalpha,beta,andgammafamilies.Alphacrystallinsarefurtherdividedintoacidic(AlphaA)andbasic(AlphaB)groups.
Inthelens,alphacrystallinmaintainsproperrefractiveindex,howeveritcanalsofunctionasamolecularchaperonethatbindstodenaturedproteins,keepingtheminsolutionandmaintainingthetranslucencyofthelens.Inresponsetocellularstress,alphacrystallinisphosphorlyatedandmayserveastructuralcontrolfunctionandplayaroleinproteinmaintenance.BothalphaAandalphaBcrystallinpreventapoptosisbyinhibitingcaspases.
Thisantibodyrecognizeshuman,mouse,rat,andbovinealphaAcrystallin.Otherspecieshavenotbeentested.Itdoesnotcross-reactwithalphaBcrystallin,beta-Lcrystallin,beta-Hcrystallin,gammacrystallin,Hsp25,Hsp27,orHsp47.
