Alphacrystallinsarewater-solublelensproteinsofthevertebrateeyethatarerelatedtothesmallheatshockproteinfamily.Lenscrystallinsaredividedintoalpha,beta,andgammafamilies.Alphacrystallinsarefurtherdividedintoacidic(AlphaA)andbasic(AlphaB)groups.Inthelens,alphacrystallinmaintainsproperrefractiveindex,howeveritcanalsofunctionasamolecularchaperonethatbindstodenaturedproteins,keepingtheminsolutionandmaintainingthetranslucencyofthelens.Inresponsetocellularstress,alphacrystallinisphosphorlyatedandmayserveastructuralcontrolfunctionandplayaroleinproteinmaintenance.BothalphaAandalphaBcrystallinpreventapoptosisbyinhibitingcaspases.AlphaBcrystallinisfoundinmanycellsandorgansoutsidethelensandisover-expressedincellssubjectedtostressconditionsandinseveralneurologicaldisorders.
