Alphacrystallinsarewater-solublelensproteinsofthevertebrateeyethatarerelatedtothesmallheatshockproteinfamily.Lenscrystallinsaredividedintoalpha,beta,andgammafamilies.Alphacrystallinsarefurtherdividedintoacidic(AlphaA)andbasic(AlphaB)groups.

Inthelens,alphacrystallinmaintainsproperrefractiveindex,howeveritcanalsofunctionasamolecularchaperonethatbindstodenaturedproteins,keepingtheminsolutionandmaintainingthetranslucencyofthelens.Inresponsetocellularstress,alphacrystallinisphosphorlyatedandmayserveastructuralcontrolfunctionandplayaroleinproteinmaintenance.BothalphaAandalphaBcrystallinpreventapoptosisbyinhibitingcaspases.AlphaBcrystallinisfoundinmanycellsandorgansoutsidethelensandisover-expressedincellssubjectedtostressconditionsandinseveralneurologicaldisorders.

ThisantibodyrecognizeshumanandbovinealphaBcrystallin.Itdoesnotcross-reactwithalphaAcrystallin,beta-Lcrystallin,beta-Hcrystallin,gammacrystallin,Hsp25,Hsp27,orHsp47proteins.
