Hsp70bindsATPwithhighaffinityandpossessesaweakATPaseactivitywhichcanbestimulatedbybindingtounfoldedproteinsandsyntheticpeptides.Hsp70recognizesandbindstonascentpolypeptidechainsaswellaspartiallyfoldedintermediatesofproteinspreventingtheiraggregationandmisfolding.ThebindingofATPtriggersacriticalconformationalchangeleADIngtothereleaseoftheboundprotein.TheABIlityofHsp70toundergocyclesofbindingandreleasefromhydrophobicstretchesofpartiallyunfoldedproteinsisthebasisfortheirroleinavarietyofintracellularfunctionssuchasproteinsynthesis,proteinfoldingandoligomerizationandproteintransport.
