Plasmodiumfalciparumexpressestwoprominentheatshockproteins:heatshockprotein70(PfHsp70)andheatshockprotein90(PfHsp90).Bothoftheseproteinshavebeenimplicatedinthedevelopmentandpathogenesisofmalaria.PfHsp70-1isthemajorcytosolicHsp70inPlasmodiumfalciparum.Itisabundantlyexpressedinthebloodstagesoftheparasiteandappearstoconstituteapprox.1-2%oftotalparasiteprotein.ItisfoundinP.falciparumincomplexeswithPfHsp90andPfHsp40.Thetransitionfromthecoldbloodedmosquitovectortoahostrepresentsphysiologicalstresstotheparasite,and,additionally,malariabloodstageinfectionischaracterizedbyintensefeverperiods.Inrecentyears,ithasbecomeclearthatheatshockproteinsplayanessentialroleduringtheparasite'slifecycle.
